When you hear the words “roof emergency,” what usually comes to mind? Many homeowners think about the big storms that sweep through Pittsburgh, PA, necessitating roof replacements.

But have you ever thought about a roof so bad that it collapses onto your bed?

Believe it or not, that’s exactly what happened to Donald.

It’s true – when the call first came in, we could hardly believe it.

But we were on it.

What Started As A Normal Day Quickly Turned Into An Emergency

No one thinks their day will end with their roof on their own bed. But for Donald, that’s exactly what happened.

Thankfully, no one was in the bed or sleeping when it happened, so no one was hurt. Phew!

But there was still a major problem – there was a giant hole in their ceiling and a bedroom filled with roof fragments and debris.

So, He Called In The Experts At Mt. Pleasant Window & Remodeling Co.

We responded quickly and professionally when Donald was in crisis, and replaced his roof as soon as possible.

Regular Roof Maintenance Catches Small Issues Before They Get Worse

We get it. Life is busy.

Between work, family, and life in general, it can be difficult to schedule home improvements – especially on something (like your roof) that you don’t really see on a regular basis.

Unlike your siding, which can be very obviously damaged after a storm, or your windows, which can show clear failing signs like condensation and high energy bills, signs of a failing roof are much more subtle.

Missing shingles aren’t always obvious, especially if they’re located at the very top of the house where you can’t see from the ground. It’s also easy to second-guess yourself, asking aloud, “Are those shingles curling, or is that just from the rain?” or “Maybe granules in the gutters are normal – we just had a bad storm, after all.”

Donald, like most homeowners, was busy with life and didn’t have the time to focus on his roof.

Not until it deteriorated to the point where it was piled in his bedroom.

At that point, it was hard to ignore!

What should I do if my roof collapses or my ceiling caves in?

Prioritize safety first—keep people out of the room, watch for electrical hazards, and protect belongings if it’s safe to do so. Then call a local roofing contractor immediately to tarp the roof and prevent further water intrusion while a permanent repair or replacement plan is put in place.

Why can roof problems be so hard to notice before they become serious?

Many warning signs are subtle or hard to see from the ground—like missing shingles near the peak, curling edges, or granules collecting in gutters. Homeowners often second-guess these signs until the damage becomes obvious inside the home.

How can I avoid an emergency like Donald’s?

Don’t wait for a major leak or visible interior damage. Schedule routine roof inspections/maintenance, especially after storms or if your roof is older. If you suspect your roof is failing, getting an estimate early can help you replace it on your timeline—before a small issue becomes a dangerous, expensive crisis.
